Russia announced on Sunday that it has made military advances in Ukraine, a claim not denied by the Ukrainian military authorities. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its forces have taken control of the village of Krokhmalny in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian army confirmed the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the village.
The Russian army declared its control over the village of Krokhmalny due to successful operations carried out by units of the Western Group in the Kupyansk region. This town is located about 30 kilometers southeast of Kupyansk.
This progress follows a similar statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday, stating that Russian forces had taken control of the residential settlement of Vaisle in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
Russia has intensified pressure around towns in eastern Ukraine, such as Kupyansk, Lyman, and Avdiivka. Moscow claims that its forces have regained the initiative in many areas after a counterattack launched by Ukraine last year.
Ukrainian military spokesperson Volodymyr Fietii stated that the capture of Krokhmalny does not significantly affect the overall situation. Fietii added that their primary goal is to save the lives of those defending in their ranks. They have been moved to pre-prepared positions, where they are now holding the defenses to prevent further advancement.
Fietii also mentioned that the Russian forces’ capture of “several hundred meters” does not have any significant implications, describing it as a “temporary phenomenon.”
The recent developments in the Ukraine war are significant and multifaceted. The conflict has elicited responses from various global and regional actors. Nations are balancing their support for Ukraine with broader geopolitical considerations, and there is a growing concern about the war’s longer-term implications for regional and global security.
