Abdullah al-Lafi, a member of the Libyan Presidential Council, and the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, met to discuss solutions for the ongoing political deadlock in Libya and the National Reconciliation Project.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, focused on the progress of Libya’s political process and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, according to a statement from the Presidential Council shared on Facebook.

During the discussion, the two parties explored various methods to address the political stalemate. A key proposal included a “joint mechanism involving all political parties to achieve the Libyan aspirations for democratic elections accepted by all,” as mentioned in the statement.

Al-Lafi praised the European Union’s supportive role in finding a solution to Libya’s political crisis, emphasizing that “the National Reconciliation Project is the optimal choice to restore peace and stability and to meet the Libyan aspirations for electoral entitlements.”

In turn, the Head of the European Union Mission commended the “progress made by the Presidential Council in the National Reconciliation file and bringing together all political parties under the banner of reconciliation.” The statement highlighted these developments.

Furthermore, on Monday, the fourth regular meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Comprehensive National Reconciliation Conference concluded in Zuwara. The meeting was chaired by Abdullah al-Lafi and attended by the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily.

The Presidential Council is gearing up for the Comprehensive National Reconciliation Conference, set to be held in Sirte on April 28th.

Preparations include defining the mechanism for forming the preparatory committee, its competencies, and its internal system, to effectively organize the conference. This initiative represents a significant step towards resolving Libya’s prolonged political impasse and moving towards democratic governance.
