During an extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Arab League (AL) in Cairo on Wednesday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry expressed concerns over Ethiopia’s role as a source of unrest in the region. Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst ongoing tensions.

The meeting, dedicated to supporting Somalia, addressed the recent controversial deal between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland. The agreement, which grants Ethiopia access to the Red Sea, has sparked discontent in Mogadishu, viewed as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s unwavering commitment to stand by Somalia during this crucial situation, highlighting the historical relations and deep bonds between the two nations at both popular and official levels. In a phone call with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi assured Somalia of Egypt’s firm support for its security and stability.

During the AL meeting, Shoukry called on all Arab and international parties to fulfill their responsibility in respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning with the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter. He rejected any actions that could compromise Somalia’s sovereignty or impede the Somali people’s exclusive right to benefit from their resources.

Shoukry also conveyed that Egypt is actively coordinating efforts to provide necessary training and support for Somalians. This initiative aims to empower them to assert control over their entire territory, reinforcing their ability to safeguard sovereignty and navigate challenges effectively.
