The Independent has uncovered a startling series of thefts from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), reporting over 150 items stolen last year.
The list of stolen goods includes a machine gun, night vision goggles, an electric lamp, televisions, various electronic devices, assault ladders, elements of official uniforms, a rifle, two computers, medals, and an ID card granting access to the MoD.
Among the more unusual items reported stolen are several bicycles, gym equipment, a clothes dryer, and “silver pheasant ornaments.”
This information was disclosed by Dr. Andrew Morrison, a Minister at the MoD, in response to a written parliamentary question posed by Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney, who described the findings as “astonishing.”
The Independent reports that 213 thefts were recorded between December 2022 and December 2023.
At least 153 pieces of service equipment and 34 other defense assets were reported stolen, along with 10 IT equipment thefts, eight cash thefts, six fuel thefts, and two metal thefts.
While Morrison refrained from releasing a full list of missing items citing ongoing investigations, he stated that the MoD is “not immune” to theft. He added that some items might later be recovered or reclassified as misplaced.
Morrison emphasized the MoD’s efforts to detect and deter theft, with robust processes in place to raise awareness about vigilance in all security aspects.
He encouraged individuals to report any evidence of loss or suspected theft, noting that some reported cases of theft eventually lead to the recovery of the stolen properties.
However, Olney expressed concern over the government’s duty to maintain public safety, suggesting that the stolen items, including firearms, could pose a risk to public life. She called for an investigation into the lapses and potential risks posed by the thefts.
A spokesperson for the MoD stated, “We take the security of defense assets very seriously and have strong policies and procedures to prevent losses and thefts.
If any loss or disappearance of assets due to suspected criminal activity is reported, we take necessary steps to investigate, prosecute, and recover these items.”
