Christian Berger, the Ambassador of the European Union in Cairo, expressed his condemnation of the targeting and killing of journalists in Gaza and conflict zones around the world.

His remarks came during a gathering organized by the European Union Embassy in Cairo to mark the beginning of the new year, attended by the Ambassador of Belgium to Cairo, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, as well as European ambassadors and media officials in Cairo.

Berger stated that this meeting was held for the first time and praised the role of journalism and media in Egypt, acknowledging the significant risks they face in the course of their duty, which can sometimes cost them their lives.

He also highlighted the achievements made in 2023 within the framework of Egyptian-European relations, describing them as fruitful.

Numerous agreements were reached to strengthen these relations, and high-level visits took place between Egypt and the European Union.

Berger announced that in 2024, efforts would be concentrated on enhancing this relationship, launching new initiatives, and announcing financial contributions to support Egypt’s economy.

Specific focus areas will include water resources, with a Water Week event scheduled for October, as well as cooperation in the fields of security, maritime affairs, and counterterrorism.

François Cornil de Launois, the Ambassador of Belgium, emphasized that during his country’s presidency of the EU over the next six months, the focus would be on supporting and defending democracy, uniting Europe, enhancing competitiveness, strengthening social programs, protecting individuals, and promoting Europe as a force for peace, cherished unity, and global influence.
