The acting Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has issued a stark warning that any large-scale explosion in South Lebanon could lead to a comprehensive regional conflagration.

This statement was made during his meeting on Saturday with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, marking the beginning of Borrell’s visit to the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The discussion focused on the ongoing cooperation between the Lebanese government and the European Union in social, economic, and administrative reform matters.

Mikati emphasized the importance of resolving the Syrian refugee issue by supporting them in their own country to encourage their return.

Regarding the Israeli aggression in Gaza and South Lebanon, Mikati asserted that Lebanon seeks peace and is not an advocate for war. He clarified that his country aspires to achieve stability and is making the necessary diplomatic efforts in this regard.

Mikati also stressed Lebanon’s commitment to implementing United Nations Resolution 1701, underscoring that full compliance with this resolution first requires an end to Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty and a withdrawal from Lebanese territories still under occupation. He called for efforts to establish a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue by granting Palestinians their rightful claims.
