More than 4,360 people were killed in Syria in 2023, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday. The figure is down from 3,800 in 2022, but still represents a significant loss of life.

The observatory, a British-based non-profit organization that tracks the conflict in Syria, said that the majority of the deaths in 2023 were civilians, including 241 women and 307 children. The rest of the deaths were attributed to government forces, opposition groups, and the Islamic State group.

The observatory also reported that three people were killed in a missile strike on a market in the city of Idlib on Sunday.

The conflict in Syria has been raging for over a decade, and has killed more than half a million people. It has also caused widespread damage to infrastructure and the economy, and has displaced millions of people.
