US President Joe Biden cautioned on Friday about the potential for direct US involvement due to the repercussions of Russian operations in Ukraine on European security. In a statement published on the White House’s website, Biden noted the significant risks extending beyond Ukraine, impacting the entirety of the NATO alliance and the security of Europe, as well as the future of transatlantic relations.
The statement highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts not only to destroy Ukraine but also his threats to some NATO allies, with consequences echoing globally. Hence, the United States has mobilized an alliance of over 50 countries to support Ukraine’s defense. President Biden emphasized the imperative to support allies, partners, and Ukraine, stating, “We cannot let down our allies and partners; we cannot let down Ukraine.”
According to the statement, Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began overnight, employing drones and missiles, including hypersonic ones, targeting cities and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
In response, Ukraine deployed air defense systems provided by the US and its allies, successfully intercepting and destroying many missiles and drones. The statement expressed pride in the American support that has helped save lives and assist Ukraine in defending its people, freedom, and independence.
The statement also stressed the urgency for Congress to act swiftly in the new year. Without immediate congressional action, the US will be unable to continue sending vital weapons and air defense systems needed by Ukraine to protect its people. “Congress must act without further delay,” the statement concluded.
