A Ugandan parliamentarian announced on Tuesday that at least 5 people, including a local official, were killed in an attack by suspected rebels affiliated with a group allied with the terrorist organization ISIS in western Uganda.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) emerged as a rebel group opposing Kampala in the mid-1990s and initially engaged with President Yoweri Museveni’s government from bases in the Rwenzori Mountains.

Parliamentarian Kuthbert Abigaba stated that the rebels attacked the Kiabandara Archdiocese in the Kamwenge region.

He added that the attackers later killed a woman who was found at a small restaurant she was managing, along with 4 of her customers who had just sat down for a meal.

“After killing them, they set the restaurant on fire and looted items from nearby shops before fleeing,” Abigaba said.

Deo Akiiki, the deputy spokesperson for the Ugandan army, confirmed the attack and stated that they would provide further details later.
