Chile Calls for UN Reform

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has called for an urgent reform of the United Nations following the recent US veto against the Emirati resolution to cease hostilities in the Gaza Strip, echoing similar sentiments expressed by Turkey’s President Erdogan.

In a post on “X,” Boric stated, “There must be an urgent structural reform of the United Nations. The world is not as it was in 1945.”

The United States recently exercised its veto power in the UN Security Council, blocking the Emirati resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages.

While Britain abstained from voting, the resolution received support from the majority of the 13 Security Council members.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also called for a fundamental overhaul of the UN Security Council, highlighting that the world is larger than the five permanent member countries of the council.

He emphasized that it is unacceptable for just five nations to determine the future of the world.

Calls for reforming the UN have been growing in response to recent developments, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of the Security Council in addressing such global crises.
