China’s largest train manufacturer, has successfully launched the country’s first medium-speed high-power ammonia-powered engine in Dalian, Liaoning Province, northeast China. This represents a breakthrough for China in key related technologies.

The ammonia-powered engine, which is characterized by low carbon emissions, high safety, and good interchangeability, was independently developed and innovated by the company based on its own self-developed diesel engine technology. This environmentally friendly engine can reduce carbon emissions by 80% and produce up to 208 kilowatts of power from a single cylinder, with ammonia energy accounting for 85%.

The company explained that the engine in question achieves coordination between the entire industry chain for ammonia-powered engine components, complete machines, and application scenarios. In terms of power levels, economic efficiency, emissions, technology, and reliability, it has an advanced level both domestically and internationally.

CRRC Dalian official Lin Tsun-tse said that the successful launch of the engine accelerates the development of carbon-free engines in China, adding that China’s technical strength in the field of ammonia-powered ship application is now on par with world-renowned companies.

The launch of the ammonia-powered engine is a significant milestone for China’s efforts to develop clean energy technologies. It is also a sign of the country’s growing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.
