For the 12th Time.. Lebanese Parliament Fails to Elect President

On Wednesday, the Lebanese parliament again failed to elect a president. Neither the Hezbollah-backed candidate, Suleiman Franjieh, nor the former Finance Minister, Jihad Azour, received enough votes to win a heated parliamentary session.

This is the twelfth time that the House of Representatives has met to fill the presidency The position reserved for a member of the Maronite Christian community under the sectarian quota system in Lebanon. The position has been vacant since October, when the term of Michel Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, ended.

The failure of the vote is expected to deepen sectarian tensions in Lebanon, which is mired in one of the worst The economic crises in the world, which is also facing unprecedented political paralysis in the absence of a president and a cabinet with full powers, and the division of parliament.

Lebanese Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, concluded the presidential election session after failing to reach the required quorum of 86 deputies to proceed with the second round. As a result, no new date was announced for a future session, further prolonging the political impasse in Lebanon.
