UN Praises Activation of Climate Damage Fund at COP28

UN Secretary-General António Guterres applauded the adoption of the resolution to operationalize the “Loss and Damage” fund, aimed at compensating the most climate-affected countries, at the opening of the “28th Conference of the Parties (COP28)” hosted by the United Arab Emirates.

Guterres views the fund as a “crucial means to achieve climate justice.”

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric relayed Guterres’ call for leaders to make generous contributions to ensure a robust start for both the fund and the climate conference, according to “France Presse.”

• Madeleine Diouf Sarr, the chair of the Least Developed Countries group, encompassing 46 of the world’s poorest nations, welcomed the decision, considering it significant for climate justice.

Leading Contributions from the UAE:

•UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced a $100 million contribution to the climate disaster fund, urging all capable nations to contribute towards collective efforts and foster a spirit of human solidarity.

Contributions from Other Nations:

• The United States pledged $17.5 million towards the climate disaster fund.
• The United Kingdom committed up to £60 million (approximately $76 million).
• Japan will contribute $10 million.
• Germany has pledged to contribute $100 million.
