Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President of COP28, emphasizes the conference’s commitment to fostering consensus and productive partnerships. The goal is to unite global efforts to transform climate challenges into opportunities for sustainable economic and social development, ensuring a brighter future for current and future generations.

This announcement follows the summary of dialogues co-chaired by Dr. Al Jaber and Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, in preparation for COP28.

The summary calls for a systematic, responsible, fair, and logical energy sector transition, aiming to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Discussions, initiated in July, involved ministers and officials from over 40 countries and 20 organizations. Topics included enabling factors for the desired energy transition: emission reduction, renewable energy adoption, energy efficiency improvement, climate finance, addressing supply and demand for conventional fuels, and emission reduction.

Dr. Al Jaber notes the high-level dialogues helped identify key gaps and opportunities in climate action, shaping comprehensive initiatives to reduce emissions. He highlights the dialogues’ role in guiding nations towards an ambitious response to the global assessment of Paris Agreement goals, aligning energy systems with efforts to achieve the 1.5-degree target.

The dialogues emphasized reshaping government relations with major energy and heavy industry producers, simultaneously addressing supply and demand to create a future clean energy system while reducing current energy emissions. COP28’s presidency prioritizes this goal, focusing on consensus-building dialogues.

The fifth and final high-level dialogue session, organized by COP28 in collaboration with the International Energy Agency, is scheduled for December 1 at Expo Dubai during the Global Climate Action Summit. It will involve world leaders, government heads, and international organizations, discussing ways to achieve the highest climate ambitions and a structured energy transition, maintaining the feasibility of the 1.5-degree goal.

The summary underlines the need for cooperation and concrete collective action across nations and industries for a transition to clean energy sources, ensuring energy security and affordability, particularly crucial for the development of developing countries.
