The High Council of State in Libya has announced that the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy to Libya, Abdullah Patel, has put forth an initiative as part of the upcoming UN mission.

This announcement follows a recent phone call between the President of the High Council of State, Mohammed Tekalla, and Patel, as stated in an official release.

The phone call comes a few days after a meeting between the President of the High Council of State and the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, in Cairo.

The meeting did not yield concrete results, but both parties agreed to continue consultations regarding the political crisis to find a Libyan-Libyan solution that meets the aspirations and interests of the Libyan people.

It’s worth noting that the latest political activity of the UN Special Envoy to Libya, Abdullah Patel, was his attendance at the meeting of the Joint Military Committee “5+5” and the Security Working Group, emanating from the “Berlin Process,” which took place last Tuesday.

Libya is currently experiencing an escalating political crisis with two competing governments in the country.

One is located in the east of the country and is endorsed by the Parliament, while the other is based in the west, in Tripoli, and is the result of political agreements facilitated by the United Nations.

The government in Tripoli, led by Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibah, insists on transferring power only through elections, refusing any other means of relinquishing authority.
