The United States European Command (EUCOM) announced on Sunday the devastating loss of five American soldiers as a result of a military aircraft crash over the Mediterranean Sea during a routine training exercise on Friday.

“During a routine air refueling mission as part of military training, a US military aircraft carrying five service members suffered a mishap and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. All five of the service members onboard the aircraft were killed,” EUCOM said in a statement on the November 10 accident.

While the US military did not specify the type of aircraft involved or its flight location, it’s worth noting that the United States deploys aircraft carriers to the region as part of its efforts to prevent the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas into a regional conflict.

EUCOM’s statement on Saturday clarified that the military aircraft crash occurred in the eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing that the incident is unrelated to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas or tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

The statement stated that the aircraft was related to training, with no indications of hostile activity.

In response to the unprecedented attack by Hamas within Israel on October 7, which resulted in the tragic loss of 1,200 lives, mostly civilians, the United States deployed warships to the Mediterranean region.

In turn, the Israeli Defense Forces carried out continuous air and ground offensives, resulting in more than 11,000 casualties, including many children and women, according to the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.
