A specialized report today highlighted a significant surge in cyber attacks in Italy, with an alarming 40% increase in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year. The Italian Association for Computer Security (CLUSIT) released this data, revealing a worrying 300% rise in cyber attacks against Italy from 2018 to June 2023. This spike makes Italy one of the most affected countries globally in terms of cybersecurity threats.
Italy’s Cyber Attack Rate Exceeds Global Average
Currently, Italy experiences a cyber attack rate nearly four times higher than the global average. In the first six months of 2023 alone, Italian victims constituted 9.6% of total global cyber attack victims, as per the analysis. This statistic is particularly concerning considering Italy’s relatively small size in terms of global GDP and population.
Digital Piracy and Its Impact on Italian Organizations
The study also points out that over 37% of global digital piracy events, which involve the peaceful use of digital tools for political purposes, have impacted Italian organizations. In the past five years, there have been 505 particularly serious attacks involving Italian entities. Notably, 132 of these attacks, accounting for 26%, occurred in the first half of 2023, with a peak in April witnessing 262 cyber attacks.
Financial and Insurance Sectors Heavily Targeted
Gabriele Faggioli, the president of CLUSIT, highlighted the disproportionate impact on Italy, considering its small share in global GDP and population. The financial and insurance sectors recorded the most significant increase in serious incidents, with 9.0% of this year’s attacks targeting these sectors, up from 3.7% the previous year. Alarmingly, the total number of attacks in just six months of 2023 has already surpassed the total for the entire year of 2022.
Effects on Small and Medium-Sized Italian Companies
Faggioli also pointed to the severe effects on small and medium-sized Italian companies over the past three years, exacerbated by the pandemic-driven rush towards digitization. These entities appear unprepared to withstand the increasing pressure of cyber attacks, underscoring a critical need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in Italy’s digital landscape.
