Japan has reassured the international community that the Group of Seven (G7) nations’ support for Ukraine will remain steadfast, even as tensions in the Middle East escalate. As foreign ministers from the G7 convene in Tokyo for virtual talks with Kyiv, the message is clear: the commitment to impose severe sanctions on Russia and to provide robust support to Ukraine is unwavering.
The G7, consisting of the world’s seven wealthiest democracies, along with the European Union, is set to discuss pressing issues including the Russian war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict. Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa highlighted in a press briefing that the G7 is arranging a virtual meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba during the Tokyo session, signaling a coordinated effort to address the crisis.
A senior U.S. official has indicated that the G7 nations are prepared for a long-term Russian war strategy in Ukraine, necessitating sustained military and economic support for Kyiv. This group has been at the forefront of imposing sanctions on Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an unexpected appearance at the G7 summit in Hiroshima earlier in May.
In a recent move to escalate economic pressure on Russia, the G7 is considering sanctions on Russian diamonds. Additionally, Japan has acknowledged that it will inevitably be impacted by U.S. sanctions on Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project, in which Japanese entities hold a 10% stake.
The G7 finds consensus on Ukraine more straightforward than addressing the escalating crisis between Israel and Gaza, which has claimed thousands of civilian lives and threatens to spiral into a regional conflict. Following the outbreak of war, the G7 has issued a single joint statement on the conflict, while other member states have released separate statements. Kamikawa has stated that the G7 plans to call for a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into bombarded Gaza during the Tokyo talks.
