International aid organization Oxfam has expressed grave concerns over the lives of approximately 500,000 Palestinians currently entrapped in what’s described as a ‘siege within a siege’ situation in North Gaza. In a statement released on Friday, the charity highlighted the near-total stranglehold Israeli forces have on the city of Gaza and its northern region.
Oxfam accused Israel of collective punishment against civilians in Gaza and violating international humanitarian law by depriving people of essential resources like food, water, fuel, medication, and other forms of assistance. The organization warned of the potential for more devastating losses among the civilian population in North Gaza, stressing that humanitarian support has become nearly impossible in the region.
Hassan Suwarjo, a humanitarian worker with Oxfam in North Gaza, shared the dire circumstances on the ground. He mentioned sharing resources with ten other families as local markets are almost empty. “There’s no fresh food available throughout the city. We are reliant on canned food. The bakeries have no electricity, and there’s only a limited amount of fuel available. Our children are suffering; they don’t understand why we had to move, and why Israel is firing at us,” Suwarjo explained.
The charity urged for an immediate ceasefire and the allowance of humanitarian aid to reach the people. It also called on the international community to exert pressure to end the prolonged Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, including lifting the siege on Gaza.
