Paul Soler, the Special Envoy of the French President, and Mustafa Mehrach, the French Ambassador to Libya, called for a swift move towards elections in Libya “as soon as possible.”
This call was made during a meeting between Soler, Mehrach, and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the Prime Minister of the “Temporary National Unity Government.”
They discussed the political process, according to a tweet from the French Embassy in Libya on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter).
The French Embassy stated that the meeting addressed the catastrophic consequences of the Derna tragedy, emphasizing France’s humanitarian commitment. This includes a field hospital and emergency aid of four million euros to the United Nations Development Programme and non-governmental humanitarian organizations.
Additionally, they discussed the situation in Gaza, particularly the “call from France for peace, security, and a humanitarian truce,” as per the embassy’s statement.
On the other hand, the official “Our Government” platform reported that Dbeibah discussed the reconstruction file of Derna and the municipalities affected by the floods that hit the eastern region on September 10th with Soler and Mehrach.
“Our Government” added that the French side confirmed “its support for the efforts of the National Unity Government in this matter.”
Meanwhile, Dbeibah emphasized “Libya’s rejection of what is happening in the Palestinian territories, a stance that has been clear in all international forums discussing the events in Gaza.”
He praised France’s supportive position of the Arab decision in the United Nations General Assembly regarding the situation in the Palestinian sector.
Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed her deep concerns regarding the potential commission of war crimes in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
She stated” “We are worried that war crimes might be being committed… We are also concerned about the collective punishment of the people of Gaza in response to the brutal attacks by Hamas, which in turn also amount to war crimes.”
