The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a call for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the delivery of food supplies to the Gaza Strip. This plea comes as Israel continues its airstrikes on the region, as reported by Reuters.
In a statement from its headquarters in Rome, the WFP emphasized, “With the intensifying conflict, civilians, including children and vulnerable families, are facing increasing challenges in accessing essential food supplies.”
The WFP further stated, “The program urges the safe and unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected areas, while also calling on all parties to adhere to the principles of humanitarian law, including ensuring access to food.”
The program currently provides direct food assistance to approximately 350,000 Palestinians each month and extends aid through cash transfers to nearly one million Palestinians in collaboration with other humanitarian partners.
Additionally, the WFP expressed its readiness to provide food stocks for displaced individuals and those residing in shelters. Despite most stores in the affected areas of Palestine currently maintaining a one-month food supply, these reserves are at risk of rapid depletion as people stock up in fear of a prolonged conflict.
Today, Israeli aircraft carried out strikes on the Gaza Strip following one of the deadliest attacks Israel has endured in decades, as militants from Hamas infiltrated Israeli towns. This event resulted in the deaths of 700 people and the abduction of dozens more.
The Israeli military has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers around the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal strip inhabited by 2.3 million Palestinians, amid widespread speculation of an imminent and large-scale Israeli incursion into the territory.
