President Joe Biden has voiced his concerns regarding the turmoil within the Republican ranks in Congress, particularly as it relates to securing new funding for Ukraine. He stated that he will soon deliver a speech on this matter, according to CNN. Just one day after the removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, marking the first time in Congress’s history, Biden remarked, “This concerns me, but I know that a majority of members in both the House and Senate have expressed their support for Ukraine funding.”

Biden’s comments come at a time when Republicans are in the process of selecting a new House Speaker, and the leading contenders for this position hold differing stances on Ukraine. The group supporting Kiev, which ranks Republican lawmakers based on their support for Ukraine, awarded a “B” grade to Congressman Steve Scalise, who voted in favor of previous aid packages. On the other hand, Congressman Jim Jordan received an “F,” the lowest grade, due to his prior votes against Ukraine funding.

Biden emphasized that it remains in the interest of Americans to continue supporting Ukraine. He mentioned that he is considering a speech to clarify this point, stating, “I will soon deliver a major speech on this issue and why it is of utmost importance to the United States and our allies that we maintain our commitment.”

The White House has not provided further details regarding the scheduled speech. In his address, Biden is expected to convey, “It is in the interest of the United States that Ukraine succeeds.”

He added, “I believe it has been clear to the vast majority of the foreign policy community, whether on the left or the right, that this has been a values exercise for the United States to increase our support worldwide.”

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy estimates that the United States has spent nearly $75 billion in supporting Ukraine thus far, including over $42 billion in military assistance. This makes Washington the world’s largest contributor to Ukraine.

The United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy, with successive administrations providing substantial aid to the country, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. President Biden’s concern regarding congressional discord comes at a crucial time when Ukraine continues to navigate geopolitical challenges and requires financial assistance to bolster its security and stability.

The removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy amid Republican divisions adds a layer of complexity to the situation. The differing positions held by leading contenders for the position of House Speaker underscore the political nuances surrounding Ukraine policy within the Republican party.

President Biden’s planned speech is anticipated to clarify the significance of continued U.S. support for Ukraine, both in terms of values and strategic interests. It will seek to garner bipartisan support for providing Ukraine with the necessary resources to address its pressing needs, including military assistance.

The Kiel Institute’s estimation of U.S. financial support underscores the significant role the United States plays in aiding Ukraine. This financial assistance not only helps Ukraine in its ongoing challenges but also reinforces America’s global leadership in promoting democracy and defending international norms and values.
