The Italian government has decided to temporarily move its embassy in Sudan to Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, following its closure five months ago due to the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
Yesterday, the “Chigi Palace”, the official residence of the Italian Prime Minister, announced on its website that “the Council of Ministers, based on the proposal from Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, has resolved to temporarily transfer the Italian embassy from Khartoum to Addis Ababa.”
It’s noteworthy that on 24th April, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, announced the closure of the Italian embassy in Sudan, suggesting a temporary relocation either to Ethiopia or Egypt.
Sudan has experienced significant political unrest and instability in recent years. The crises in the nation have prompted several countries to reconsider their diplomatic presence in Khartoum for the safety of their staff and to maintain effective diplomatic relations.
Italy’s move comes as a continuation of this trend, underlining the profound impact of the Sudanese situation on its international relations. The relocation to Addis Ababa, even if temporary, signifies a cautious approach from Italy, ensuring uninterrupted diplomatic relations in the East African region.
