In a move indicating Saudi Arabia’s progressive energy aspirations, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman proclaimed the nation’s intent to develop its inaugural nuclear power station. The announcement, revealed during the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, emphasizes the Kingdom’s initiative to harness nuclear power in boosting national development.
Minister Prince Abdulaziz stressed Saudi Arabia’s inherent right to benefit from peaceful nuclear technology, including the nuclear fuel cycle and commercial utilization of its uranium reserves. This stance aligns with existing international treaties and agreements, as delineated in an official statement.
Further, he emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of transparency, reliability, and security in its nuclear endeavors. Saudi Arabia, he noted, believes in the positive contributions nuclear energy can bring, both socially and economically. With this in mind, the nation is fostering its peaceful nuclear applications across various sectors, in close collaboration with the IAEA. Such endeavors encompass best practices, international experiences, and the expert advisory services offered by the agency, including Saudi’s national nuclear energy project and its components – notably, the maiden nuclear power plant.
The Energy Minister also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s dedication to international efforts in ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. He underlined the importance of confronting nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, urging the complete implementation of Resolution 1995 to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region.
Reiterating Saudi’s unwavering support for the IAEA, he called upon the global community to jointly advance nuclear technology for humanity’s benefit, decisively confronting any endeavors towards its non-peaceful and unsafe usage.
The Middle East has been a focal point of global energy considerations, with Saudi Arabia leading oil and gas production. As the world seeks cleaner and diversified energy sources, the Kingdom’s foray into nuclear power echoes its broader Vision 2030 strategy. This strategy aims at reducing oil dependency, diversifying its economy, and establishing the nation as a global investment powerhouse. The introduction of nuclear power is expected to further underpin these objectives, positioning Saudi Arabia at the forefront of innovative energy solutions in the region.
