The 67th regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has officially commenced today, set to span over four days at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria’s capital.
Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the IAEA, inaugurated the meetings. In his address, Grossi emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to monitoring nuclear programs in several countries, particularly Iran, to ensure their peaceful intentions and to bolster nuclear safety globally.

Grossi extended his gratitude to the Austrian government for their continuous support of the IAEA’s initiatives and their efforts in mitigating nuclear risks worldwide. This acknowledgment comes amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where concerns surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear station have intensified.

During the conference, high-level representatives and officials from member states are slated to deliberate on a plethora of issues, with international cooperation in achieving nuclear security at the forefront of their agenda.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plays a pivotal role in global nuclear safety, ensuring that nuclear energy is used for peaceful purposes and monitoring potential threats. Its regular general conference is a platform for member states to discuss, collaborate, and decide on crucial nuclear matters.

Given the geopolitical scenarios, especially the situation in Ukraine, this year’s conference holds significant importance.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine, in particular, has been a focal point of international concern amidst the nation’s ongoing conflict. The meeting in Vienna is anticipated to provide clarity and collaborative measures for global nuclear safety amidst these pressing challenges.
