Foreign Minister of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, stated in a recent speech that the country finds itself confronted by intricate crises, some of which it has no hand in creating.
He emphasized the need for immediate global intervention, particularly concerning the debt crisis plaguing low and middle-income nations.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Shoukry urged for an enhancement of the existing financing tools and an increase in the special drawing rights of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He said, “We need to restore confidence in the global economic system’s instruments,” as quoted by the Arab World News Agency.
Additionally, Shoukry accused Ethiopia of violating international law through its unilateral actions related to the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). “Egypt is grappling with water issues, facing an acute water scarcity, with a deficit exceeding 50% of our water needs,” Shoukry voiced out.
The minister firmly rejected any unilateral measures regarding transboundary water resources, notably referring to the GERD.
“There is no room for believing in the imposition of a fait accompli when it comes to the lives of Egyptians,” he said. Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s commitment to serious negotiations to achieve a binding agreement concerning the filling and operation rules of the GERD.
Earlier this month, Ethiopia announced the completion of the fourth phase of filling the GERD.
