Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, emphasized the critical need to initiate investigations into the reasons behind the collapse of the Derna Dam.

In a press statement, Haq stated that the decision to launch a UN investigation into this tragedy lies with the authorities on the ground.

Haq added: “While we may conduct an investigation in the future, the United Nations only initiates such inquiries if requested by the Security Council. It’s vital to ensure that local authorities undertake these investigations.”

Regarding the UN’s appeal to raise $71 million for Libya, the spokesperson clarified that this appeal was made last Thursday.

“We’re still awaiting developments. We’ve seen considerable support for Libya from numerous countries globally. We hope this moral support translates into collected funds,” he concluded

Earlier this week, the President of Libya’s House of Representatives, Counselor Agila Saleh, held a pivotal meeting with a delegation from the Libyan government’s High Committee for Emergency and Rapid Response.

The primary aim of the discussions was to assess the ongoing search and rescue operations in the streets and areas of Derna City. The delegation also briefed Saleh on the latest developments in regions affected by recent floods and inundations.

Saleh lauded the relentless efforts put forth by various units of the armed forces, local and international teams, and volunteers from all over Libya.

He expressed gratitude for their swift response from day one of the tragedy, highlighting their commendable determination in tackling the challenges presented by the floods.
