On Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that a US Navy P-8A Poseidon plane came close to the Russian borders over the Barents Sea. In a swift response, Russia scrambled a MiG-31 fighter jet to ascertain the aircraft’s identity and ensure the integrity of their airspace.
According to the Ministry’s statement, Russian airspace monitoring systems detected an aircraft moving towards the country’s borders over the Barents Sea. To respond effectively and prevent any potential breach, a MiG-31 from the Northern Fleet’s Air Defense Forces was immediately deployed.
Upon approach, the Russian MiG-31 identified the intruding aircraft as the US Navy’s P-8A Poseidon. The American aircraft promptly distanced itself from the Russian borders once the MiG-31 drew near, ensuring no border transgressions occurred.
The Defense Ministry was keen to note that the Russian jet’s operations were in full compliance with international regulations for flying over neutral waters. They further stated that their aircraft didn’t traverse international air routes and maintained a safe distance from the foreign plane.
