In a statement today, the UK’s Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, reiterated the United Kingdom’s unchanged stance concerning the occupied Palestinian territories, underscoring its unwavering commitment to the two-state solution.
The affirmation was made during a meeting between Cleverly and Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammed Shtayyeh, in Ramallah, according to a spokesperson from the British Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
Official sources from the British government website conveyed Cleverly’s renewed assurance during his discussion with Shtayyeh. The UK remains dedicated to the two-state resolution based on the 1967 borders, recognizing Jerusalem as a shared capital.
Cleverly acknowledged the concerns of the Palestinian Prime Minister regarding the growing instability in the West Bank, especially in the context of increased Israeli incursions and escalating settler violence.
The British Foreign Secretary also urged Shtayyeh to conduct elections in the occupied Palestinian territories as soon as feasible, viewing this as a pivotal step in the democratic renewal process.
