On Thursday, Bloomberg News reported that the G20 nations have unanimously agreed to award permanent membership to the African Union (AU).

This groundbreaking decision positions the AU on an equal footing with the European Union, currently labeled as an “invited international organization.”

The report further highlights that G20 leaders are anticipated to officially announce this significant decision at an upcoming summit in India within a few days.

The Group of Twenty (G20) is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. Its aim is to discuss and promote international financial stability.

The African Union, comprising 55 African countries, is a continental body ensuring that Africa has a unified voice on the global stage. Granting the AU a permanent seat at the G20 table is a nod to Africa’s growing influence in global economic matters and affirms the continent’s integral role in shaping the future of global economics and politics.
