A groundbreaking development in China’s maritime landscape was revealed today as reports confirmed the upcoming launch of the first battery-powered tourist ship to set sail on the Huangpu River in Shanghai later this year.
According to the Chinese publication “China Daily,” Tian Yi, responsible for the ship’s battery energy system, disclosed that the vessel, named “Shanghai Jiushi,” is equipped with 150 seats and produces zero emissions.
Not only does it refrain from causing pollution, but it also emits a low noise level, enhancing the overall experience for passengers.
The “Shanghai Jiushi” ship has been the result of independent research and development efforts, carried out by the Shanghai Institute of Marine Equipment Research under the umbrella of China’s government-owned shipbuilding company.
The ship, measuring 41.51 meters in length and 10.9 meters in width, was handed over to the operating company in August, with ongoing preparations and licensing procedures. It is slated to begin service later this year, as reported by the newspaper.
A report from “China Ship News” emphasizes that over 50 tourist ships currently ply the waters of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, primarily relying on traditional fuels.
However, the integration of new engines in these ships could substantially curtail carbon emissions, potentially reducing annual emissions by thousands, if not tens of thousands, of metric tons.
Tian Yi affirmed that initiatives like the “Shanghai Jiushi” project align with the country’s emission reduction and carbon neutrality objectives, while also complementing Shanghai’s ambitions in developing its maritime front.
