Libyan Lawmakers Warn ‘6+6’ Committee Against Overstepping Boundaries

A group of 61 Libyan Members of Parliament (MPs) issued a statement on Saturday, calling out the ‘6+6’ Committee. This committee, made up of representatives from the House of Representatives and the State Council and tasked with formulating electoral laws, was accused of exceeding its responsibilities and deviating from its pre-established mandate concerning contentious issues linked to the presidential election.

The MPs held the presidency of the House of Representatives accountable for validating or accepting the committee’s results without consulting the full parliamentary assembly.

The MPs praised the progress made by the ‘6+6’ Committee, according to the statement. They, however, expressed concern over comments by some of its members, notably those discussing the possibility of expanding the number of members in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers urged the ‘6+6’ Committee to abstain from altering the allocation of parliamentary seats, either by augmentation or reduction, advising that such a decision should be reserved for the upcoming constitution. They also stressed the immediate need for the committee to reconvene at the parliamentary assembly for discussions and consensus-building, a standard procedure for all committees, particularly the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The statement was endorsed by a list of 61 MPs, including Sultan Al-Mismari, Saleh Hashem Ismail, Amer Omran Nasr, and Issa Al-Arabi among others.
