According to Morocco’s electronic newspaper, Hespress, the country has ruled out any restrictions on entry due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in infection rates. This news is particularly resonant among the workers at the Port of Tangier, a crucial connection between Morocco and Europe.

The Decision-making Process
Officials are expected to make a final decision after the completion of the repatriation process of Moroccans residing abroad, particularly those in European countries. This is to avoid the confusion that may arise for Moroccan families linked to resumption of work and the start of the school year for children.
Scientific Committee’s Stand
Hespress reached out to several members of the Scientific Committee for Combating COVID-19.
All vehemently denied any upcoming decision concerning border closures, asserting that the epidemiological situation in the country is stable. One unnamed member stated, “The situation is stable, and there is no decision yet to close the borders to incoming travelers from countries experiencing a high spread of the new variant.”

Expert Opinions
Said Afif, a member of the Scientific Committee for Vaccination against COVID-19, confirmed that the situation is under control. He stressed the importance of vigilance and monitoring, especially as the temperature drops with the onset of autumn. Afif also emphasized that a closure scenario is “not on the table,” highlighting the need for special care for the elderly who suffer from chronic diseases.

Preparations for New Variants
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has activated its technical teams to monitor the new viral variant called “Eris,” which has been spreading in several countries in recent weeks. Multiple international health reports suggest that this new variant is less virulent, which makes the return to a critical health situation unlikely.

Conclusion
Despite a global uptick in COVID-19 cases and the emergence of new variants, Morocco has decided not to close its borders. The country believes it is adequately prepared to handle any spikes in cases and does not see the need for such drastic measures as of now.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led many countries to implement strict border controls to curb the spread of the virus. However, Morocco has taken a different path, maintaining a more open stance despite the global and local rise in COVID-19 cases. This decision is crucial, given that the country serves as a significant link between Africa and Europe, particularly through its Mediterranean port in Tangier.
