The Russian Embassy in Lebanon is liaising with Lebanese authorities over the detention of a Russian citizen and his spouse at Beirut Airport, as per a diplomatic source cited by Russia’s TASS news agency today. The embassy is awaiting permission for its personnel to meet with the detained Russians, although details of the arrest have not been disclosed, according to the Arab World News Agency.

Simultaneously, security sources indicate that Lebanon’s General Security detained the Russian citizen and his wife as they were exiting through Beirut Airport. Reports suggest the Russian man admitted to being recruited by Israeli intelligence and was instructed to travel to Lebanon. He was provided with maps highlighting locations, gatherings, and facilities affiliated with Hezbollah and was tasked with surveying and photographing them if possible.

Furthermore, the Russian citizen admitted to having visited the suburb multiple times to gather data to corroborate with information previously held by his operators. During questioning, his wife also confessed to being aware of her husband’s activities and assisting him in his tasks.

Communication has been initiated between Lebanon’s General Security and the Russian Embassy in Beirut to inform them of the arrest nature before the case is referred to the military court.

Lebanon and Russia have generally maintained diplomatic ties, but instances like these strain relationships not just between Lebanon and Russia but also involve other regional actors like Israel due to the alleged spying charges. Russia has previously been concerned with its citizens being detained in foreign countries on espionage and other criminal charges, and it remains to be seen how this incident will affect diplomatic relations or negotiations in the geopolitical context.
