The Libyan Armed Forces announced on Friday the commencement of a comprehensive military operation along the country’s southern borders with Niger and Chad.
Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Mismari, the spokesperson for the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces, stated, “A military operation has been launched in the southern border zone to ensure the security of the nation’s borders, its assets, and the safety of its citizens. This is part of a continued effort to extend and consolidate its control and influence.”
He further added, “The Supreme Command will not allow Libya to be a launching pad for any groups or armed formations that pose a threat to its neighbors or serve as a base for any illegal activities. It firmly emphasizes the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs, political challenges, and issues of friendly, fraternal, and neighboring countries.”
Libya has faced ongoing political turmoil and security challenges since the overthrow of its former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, in 2011. The nation’s vast desert borders with its southern neighbors have historically been porous, facilitating the movement of militant groups, smugglers, and illegal migrants. Securing these borders has been a priority for the Libyan government, particularly given the potential security threats from armed factions operating in the Sahel region.
This recent military operation underscores Libya’s commitment to bolstering its border security, ensuring stability within its territory, and fostering trust with neighboring countries. The move is also seen as an effort to project its sovereign control over all its territories, especially at a time when there’s an increasing international focus on the Sahel region due to rising militant activities and security concerns.
