A U.S. F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet, part of the military fleet, crashed near San Diego late on Thursday, as confirmed by the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The Marines announced on Friday that search and rescue efforts were underway. The site of the crash is located on US government land near the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, with no apparent damage to any ground properties. An inquiry into the incident is already in progress.

The F/A-18 Hornet, recognized as the country’s premier all-weather combat and strike plane, plays a pivotal role in Marine Corps aviation, as described by the Naval Air Systems Command.

A representative for the military informed Fox News that a single individual was on the jet when it crashed in an isolated region to the east of the base.

The statement released by the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar detailed that the jet crash occurred around 11:54 P.M. PST and clarified that although the aircraft was operating from MCAS Miramar, it wasn’t associated with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

“Search and rescue actions are ongoing,” the statement added. “An investigation has begun.”
