In a recent turn of events, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced on Tuesday that the number of Palestinian casualties due to the fierce cyclone battering eastern Libya has risen to nine, with several others reported missing.
The political advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Ahmed Al-Deek, relayed information from the General Consulate of the State of Palestine in Benghazi about the tragic demise of a Palestinian family in the Derna region of Eastern Libya.
According to consulate sources, the family of Mahmoud Al-Tawab, including his wife and children, consisting of nine members, perished in the Derna area due to the devastating floods induced by the cyclone.
The ministry has updated the count of Palestinian victims from the cyclone’s wrath to nine, with a reported increase in the number of missing persons to three.
Furthermore, the ministry stated that it is closely monitoring the situation of 62 Palestinians stranded by floodwaters in a village near Derna. The General Consulate of the State of Palestine in Benghazi is actively coordinating with the Libyan Red Crescent to ensure their safe relocation to secure areas.
Ambassador Al-Deek underlined the severity of the conditions in the affected region of eastern Libya, describing them as exceedingly challenging.
The cyclone’s impact on eastern Libya has drawn international attention, with numerous foreign nationals among the victims. The Palestinian community, like many others in the region, finds itself grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
