The Somali Prison Service confirmed the death of all prisoners who fired shots inside the Central Prison in the capital city this Saturday morning.

According to a statement from the Somali General Command, as reported by the Somali News Agency (SONNA) today, 5 prisoners were eliminated after attempting to disrupt the security of the Central Prison by exchanging gunfire with prison guards.

The statement clarified that these prisoners had previously been sentenced to death for their affiliation with extremist militias.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in Somalia, where prisons often face overcrowding and security breaches.

Militant groups, including Al-Shabaab, continue to pose significant threats to stability, prompting heightened security measures across the country.

The Somali government, with support from international partners, has been working to improve prison conditions and enhance security protocols to curb violence and extremism within its penal system.
