At least four individuals have been injured in a shooting incident at the housing complex of Morgan State University, a historically black university located in Baltimore, Maryland.
The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday on the university’s campus, which is historically known for its predominantly African-American student population.
According to Vernon Davis, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police, four people sustained gunshot wounds, and none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
Officials suspect that there may be more than one shooter involved in the incident.
Morgan State University has advised individuals to stay away from the area surrounding Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center. Concerned parents have been urged to avoid the university campus and instead proceed to a nearby parking lot.
It is possible that the shooter(s) fired from a dormitory room, as reported by CBS. Law enforcement has confirmed that a photo of a shattered window with a bullet hole, shared by a WJZ reporter, corresponds to the residence from which the shots were fired.
Last July, data on gun violence incidents in the United States revealed a 9% increase in mass shootings compared to the previous year.
The US is nearing a record high for the highest number of mass shootings in a single year, which was set at 690 in 2021.
