Less than a week following a horrific incident in Algeria, the civil defense services announced on Tuesday the death of five individuals and injuries to twenty-nine others, resulting from a bus accident in the municipality of Al-Khaytr, southwest of the country.
The Civil Defense, in a press statement, revealed that its units intervened due to a bus carrying passengers veering off course in the village of Misbah in the municipality of Al-Khaytr, resulting in five fatalities and twenty-nine injuries. The Civil Defense had previously announced the death of thirty-four individuals and twelve injuries in a bus fire in the Tamanghasset province in southern Algeria only a few days ago.
The media and traffic coordination officer at the National Gendarmerie Command in Algeria, Major Samir Boushahit, disclosed that the services and units of the National Gendarmerie across the jurisdiction recorded 3,591 traffic accidents, causing the death of 1,116 individuals and injuring another 5,326 in the first five months of 2023. He pointed out that traffic accidents had increased by 45% compared to the same period in 2022, noting that “the primary cause of these accidents, contributing to 93%, is human error, in addition to other factors related to the roads, environment, and vehicles.”
In recent years, Algerian authorities have intensified their measures in dealing with drivers. Hundreds of cameras have been installed on the roads in the Algerian capital to monitor traffic violations with the aim of reducing accidents.
