The ongoing conflict in Gaza has witnessed a significant blow to Hamas, with Israeli forces reportedly eliminating between 20% and 30% of the group’s fighters since the war’s inception.
This figure, though substantial, falls considerably short of Israel’s initial objective of destroying the movement.
According to US intelligence agencies, Hamas still possesses sufficient ammunition to sustain its targeting of Israel and its forces in the besieged enclave for several more months.
Furthermore, the organization is actively working to rebuild its specialized police force in certain parts of Gaza.
Israeli military officials, both current and former, have asserted that Hamas’s primary aim is not victory but rather “survival” during the ongoing Gaza conflict that began on October 7th.
Despite the relentless air and ground campaign within Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians, Israeli authorities have not achieved their overarching goal of destroying Hamas, the group that has been in control of the Gaza Strip since 2007.
According to the US newspaper, Hamas fighters have adapted to the current situation by operating in smaller groups, with individual fighters taking on additional responsibilities to compensate for the losses incurred by their comrades.
The Gaza conflict has tragically claimed the lives of approximately 25,000 Palestinians, with around 1.9 million residents (85% of the population) forced to flee their homes due to the hostilities.
