The Tunisian Coast Guard successfully rescued 17 undocumented migrants near the shores of Mahdia in northeastern Tunisia.

However, the search continues for four individuals who remain missing.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, the migrants were attempting to reach European shores when their vessel malfunctioned at sea.

The intelligence units in Sfax have apprehended the organizer of this illegal migration operation.

Tunisia has seen a significant increase in illegal migration attempts towards Europe, particularly towards the Italian coast.

In response to this surge, the European Commission announced in September 2023 the allocation of aid to Tunisia as part of a memorandum of understanding with the European Union. This aid aims to curb the flow of undocumented migrants.

The continuous efforts by the Tunisian authorities to rescue migrants highlight the ongoing challenges and risks associated with illegal migration across the Mediterranean.

The collaborative measures between Tunisia and the EU are crucial in addressing this pressing issue and ensuring the safety and security of migrants.

Illegal migration from North Africa to Europe, especially through the central Mediterranean route, has been a persistent issue for many years.

Tunisia, due to its proximity to Italy, has become a significant departure point for migrants seeking a better life in Europe.

The Tunisian Coast Guard frequently conducts rescue operations to save migrants from perilous sea journeys, often organized by human traffickers who exploit the desperate conditions of these individuals.

The EU’s engagement with Tunisia, including financial aid and collaborative agreements, aims to tackle the root causes of migration and enhance border security and management.
