A devastating car bomb attack has claimed the lives of 16 Yemeni soldiers and left 18 others injured in southern Yemen.
The attack, which was carried out by an al-Qaeda operative, targeted a military barracks in the Abyan province, according to a Yemeni military spokesperson.
Colonel Mohammed al-Naqeeb, the spokesperson for Yemen’s Fourth Military Region, confirmed that the suicide bomber drove a vehicle loaded with explosives into the headquarters of the Third Support Brigade in the town of al-Faraydh in Moudiya district, located in the eastern part of Abyan province.
The attack occurred during the soldiers’ routine morning assembly, leading to the collapse of the building’s perimeter wall and a guard post.
Yemeni forces condemned the attack, labeling it a “cowardly terrorist act” designed to destabilize the region.
A statement released by the Yemeni military described the explosion as the work of an al-Qaeda suicide bomber, whose car bomb detonated at the military barracks, resulting in significant casualties.
Following the attack, Yemeni troops secured the area while ongoing efforts to transport the injured to nearby hospitals continued.
