In a dramatic incident late Thursday, Swiss authorities reported that an armed man wielding an axe and a knife held 15 hostages on a train for about four hours. The standoff ended when police stormed the train, resulting in the man sustaining fatal injuries.
The event unfolded in the town of Essert-sous-Champvent, situated on the railway line connecting Baulmes and Yverdon-les-Bains in the Swiss canton of Vaud, near the French border.
The Vaud cantonal police stated on Friday, “All hostages were liberated unharmed… The hostage-taker was fatally wounded during the intervention.” The police did not disclose potential motives for the assailant’s actions but identified him as a 32-year-old Iranian asylum seeker.
Jean-Christophe Sauterel, a spokesperson for the Vaud cantonal police, clarified that there was no indication the hostage situation was a terrorist act.
Prosecutor Eric Cottier, speaking to local television, remarked, “This is an unprecedented incident considering the number of victims, with 15 hostages, and the involvement of 60 police officers.”
Hostage situations are rare in Switzerland, typically occurring in banks and businesses. For example, in January 2022, employees at a watch manufacturing company were taken hostage and forced to open a safe containing precious metals.
