Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced today (Monday) that a Turkish cargo ship with a 12-person crew sank off the country’s Black Sea coast during a storm yesterday. Authorities have been unable to make contact with the crew, as reported by Reuters.
Earlier, the governor’s office in the Zonguldak province stated that the captain of the Turkish-flagged ship “Kafkamtler” had reported yesterday morning that the vessel was drifting towards a wave barrier off the Ereğli district in northwest Turkey.
The Interior Minister confirmed that the ship sank after colliding with the wave barrier, amid strong storms in the area. The governor’s office indicated that poor weather conditions prevented aircraft and ships from conducting search operations. Yerlikaya added to reporters: “As soon as the adverse weather conditions improve, search and rescue activities will commence immediately.”
