Gunmen killed ten people and injured two others at a busy intersection in the city of Bamenda in the restive Northwest Region of Cameroon, according to the governor of the region on Monday.
A witness reported that the attackers arrived in cars late on Sunday and ordered people to lie on the ground, accusing them of not supporting separatists in the area. They opened fire while some complied with their orders, while others ran away.
The Ambazonia Defense Forces, the main separatist group in English-speaking Ambazonia, denied responsibility for the incident.
They have been fighting since 2017, protesting against alleged marginalization by the predominantly French-speaking government.
North West region governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique told Reuters that a manhunt had been launched for the “terrorists” behind the massacre. “Investigations are on, and we will issue a statement on this later today,” he added.
The witness mentioned that men dressed in military uniforms arrived in two vehicles and stormed the Ntachu intersection, where restaurants, bars, and shops are located, at around 18:30 GMT.
They randomly opened fire on people before fleeing the scene.
Over 6,000 people have been killed in English-speaking regions of Cameroon since the conflict broke out in 2017 following the violent suppression of protest
