On Monday, the President of the Yemeni Presidential Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, called upon the European Union to classify Houthi militias as a global terrorist organization.

According to a statement from Al-Alimi’s office, he met with the head of the EU mission in Yemen, Gabriel Moineras Venalis, in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

During the meeting, they discussed updates on the local situation, opportunities to resume UN-mediated efforts to revive the political process in Yemen, the repercussions of Houthi terrorist attacks on maritime shipping, and the living conditions of the Yemeni people.

The statement also mentioned that the meeting addressed the path of economic and financial reforms, as well as the required European role in supporting these reforms and mitigating the ongoing impacts of Houthi terrorist attacks on oil facilities.

This includes coordinated measures with allies and friends to improve living conditions and sustain essential services.

Al-Alimi praised the European Union’s support for the Presidential Council and the Yemeni government, as well as the aspirations of the Yemeni people to restore state institutions.

He specifically highlighted European commitments to alleviate humanitarian suffering.

Al-Alimi emphasized “the importance of European friends joining punitive measures against the Houthi militias and designating them as an international terrorist organization.”

He also expressed his full support for the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to launch a comprehensive political process in Yemen based on the positive contributions of Saudi Arabia.

This call for the global terrorist designation of the Houthi militias comes after the United States announced on January 17th that it would classify the Houthi group as a global terrorist organization due to its attacks on international navigation.

The decision is set to take effect on February 16th.
