In a significant departure from the customary free access provided by most social media platforms, Elon Musk hinted at introducing a paywall for X, formerly known as Twitter.

During a live stream on X, Musk explained the rationale behind considering a modest monthly subscription fee. He remarked, “The primary motivation behind this potential shift is combatting the vast armies of bots. Instituting a payment system is the only viable solution I foresee.”

Elaborating on the impact of such a change, Musk contended that while bots might be inexpensive—potentially as low as a tenth of a penny—making them pay even a nominal amount would significantly increase their operational costs.

“If X is to effectively manage bot traffic,” Musk posited, “then a paywall is critically essential. We aim to make it a very minimal amount; it’s a larger discussion, but this is the sole defence against bot armies.”

This isn’t Musk’s inaugural dalliance with the concept of a paywall for X’s user base. Last year, according to a report by the tech newsletter Platformer, the billionaire mulled over the idea in consultation with his advisor and venture capitalist David Sacks.

Ever since acquiring the platform in October 2022, Musk has ushered in a slew of alterations. Besides renaming Twitter to X, March witnessed the replacement of the platform’s traditional verification system—signified by blue checkmarks for notable personalities—with the subscription-based Twitter Blue.

These modifications stem from Musk’s strategy to steer the platform towards profitability. In a July post on X, Musk lamented the company’s precarious financial condition, noting a nearly 50% plunge in ad revenues coupled with hefty debt burdens. “We need to attain a positive cash flow before entertaining any other luxuries,” he conveyed.

The realm of social media has traditionally thrived on free accessibility, luring users with complimentary features, and generating revenue primarily through ads. Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022 marked a turning point, with the tech mogul introducing multiple changes. This prospective paywall, if implemented, might usher in a novel economic model for such platforms, potentially reshaping the dynamics of social media monetization.
