The World Economic Forum kicked off on Monday in the Swiss resort of Davos, under the theme ‘Rebuilding Trust.’ This annual event takes place at a time when the world is experiencing a devastating war in Gaza and Ukraine, breakthroughs in artificial intelligence that cause as much excitement as they do concern, alongside a catastrophic debt crisis amid economic slowdown and climate deterioration.
Over 2,800 individuals are expected to attend the forum, including more than 60 heads of state and government, for a duration of 5 days starting from today, Monday, January 15. The theme of this year’s meeting for global political and business leaders, celebrities, and prominent social activists is ‘Rebuilding Trust.’
Mirek Dusek, the Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, said during a press conference: ‘This year’s theme is a direct response to the clear erosion of trust in societies and among nations.’ He added that some might directly link this to ‘the profound transformations around us, whether geopolitical, geoeconomic, or those related to climate and nature.’
Among the prominent political leaders participating are French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. The newly elected Argentine President Javier Milei is also expected to attend.
Representing the United States will be Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who will be joined by parties related to the war in Gaza, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, to discuss ways to end the conflict in the sector and avoid further escalation that many fear.
The World Economic Forum (WEF), held annually in Davos, Switzerland, is a significant global event that gathers leaders from various sectors to discuss pressing global issues. Founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a Swiss-German economist and professor, the WEF aims to foster global cooperation on political, social, and economic challenges. Its mission is to bring together public and private sectors to brainstorm solutions to global problems.
