WordPress, an established entity with a two-decade history, is currently introducing a novel domain offering: domain registrations lasting a remarkable 100 years.
The company made this innovative move public through a blog announcement, touting the 100-year plan as a perfect solution for families seeking to conserve their legacy online and for entrepreneurs wishing to chronicle their company’s expedition.
Though the notion of safeguarding digital assets for an entire century holds allure, it comes with a substantial price tag of $38,000, payable as a one-time sum. In return for this investment, WordPress pledges a domain registration lasting a century, automated backup across numerous servers, integration with the Internet Archive, advanced tools for ownership and hosting, and continuous round-the-clock support.
WordPress’s blog post, however, neglects to outline how the company intends to maintain the relevance of domains and backups amid the ever-changing online terrain, nor does it address the fate of these domains if the company opts to terminate the program for any reason.
While tech giants like IBM, AT&T, and Siemens have persisted for more than a century, their offerings have undergone radical transformations over time.
Given that modern computing and the internet are still relatively young, the future configuration of websites remains uncertain. Observing how WordPress adapts this initiative to the evolving digital landscape will undoubtedly be intriguing.
“Whether it’s giving a newborn the special gift of a domain and lifetime home on the web, or something you put in your will to make sure your website and story are accessible to future generations,” WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg said in a statement.
Mullenweg added: “I hope this plan gets people and other companies thinking about building for the long term.”
Over the past few months, WordPress has tried to roll out new products and features in order to adapt to the current environment.
